Coffee - Fair to Families?

This documentary "Black Gold" is about coffee. Families in coffee growing countries are going hungry because the price of coffee is so low. Children are dying of hunger because their the price of coffee is so low. This film shows the example of how some farmers are growing chat - a narcotic - instead of coffee beans because chat reaps higher profit for their families.

Hmmm...Is it our duty as parents -- to help the economies of other parents?

These families work no harder than we do. They love their children no less. By geographical lottery, we are in the better situation.

The great debate; Organic Vs. fair trade. Organic is not fair trade. Buying organic does help farmers. Fair trade also helps farmers. Organic is expensive. Fair trade even more so.

The cheapest fair trade coffee I have found is $9.00. Organic - on sale - $5.00. "Commercial" no-name is $2.99. Which choice leaves the better taste in your mouth?
