You are a...


The other day, little Thing 2 yelled with much anger, spite and frustration YOU ARE A BIG BOWL OF UGLY! and dear lord, I could not hide my giggles.

It isn't appropriate to chuckle when there is name calling. When Thing 1's feelings are so obviously being hurt. When neighbours are standing in my yard - her children playing with mine. It is not appropriate to hide my smile in my hands as I tell Thing to go to the corner. But geez, it was funny.

I've often felt like a big bowl of ugly myself. Right before giving birth, some days after giving birth. When I haven't slept enough. When the kids projectile vomit and hit me, the sofa and the floor. When I put on my "dressy" clothes for a night out and notice they have moth holes and shoulder pads.

It is not right to call people names. I just smile that Thing 2 has figured out - the exact right term - for some days of motherhood...A BIG BOWL OF UGLY.
