Halloween Post-Mortem




Was anyone else shocked to find actual peanuts (in shells) in their child's Trick or Treat bag this year?! What about Reese's Peese's or other chocolates including nuts? I am amazed that in 2007 - a very aware year - people are still giving out items containing nuts. Our bag was full of nut items.

There is a kid in my child's class that has a nut allergy. When I brought in my 24 cupcakes for the class party -- the teacher was very apologetic that she didn't remind me not to use peanut oil in the baking. I actually wondered - who uses peanut oil these days?

Allergies to nut/nut oils can be so severe but yet so simple to avoid...just don't introduce these ingredients into the environment. Perhaps as a parent, we become more aware than - say grandparents about food sensitivities. We are informed by school bulletins and camp newsletters about what nut-free foods are available.

What peanut free things (other than chocolate) did I find in the Trick or Treat bags?...
- granola bars (Quaker)
- juice boxes
- nut free cookies
- cans of pop
- sunflower seeds
- lollipops

Would you knowingly give a nut/nut oil food to a child?

I gave out reese's peanut butter cups and the other assorted chocolate bars that came in the nut full box (oh henry and others most contianing nuts) for halloween. I am concsious of nut allergies and my son has a close friend who is allergic to nuts and just about everything else (including bananas!), however there are plenty more kids out there who are not allergic and enjoy these nutty treats. I would not send nutty treats to school/daycare where the children are not directly supervised by a parent however on halloween I have to say sorry to the parents of nut allergy children but it is their job not mine to keep their kids safe. If having a packaged nut product in the halloween goody bag means their child cannot have anything from the whole bag then they need to make sure they are with the child and turn down the nutty treats...or find another solution for their family...I am pretty tired of all the things I have to do that inconvenince me and my children to accomodate people I don't even know...I will do it at the daycare, I will do it at the school, I will do it in my house if someone I know with an allergy is visiting (I made my son's birthday cake instead of ordering from a bakery since I knew his friend was not allowed to have cake made at a bakery), but I will not do it on halloween...if you don't want my candy don't take it!
