Writing Contest for Grades 4, 5 & 6

From October 6 to November 14, 2008 Habitat for Humanity Canada and Genworth Financial Canada are asking students in grade 4, 5 and 6 across Canada to write about what "home" means to them by entering the Meaning of Home Contest.

The 2007 contest had over 1,900 entries! This year, they are hoping for greater success by accepting English and French submissions. It is estimated that over 300,000 Canadians are homeless - this year alone. This includes Moms, Dads and kids.

Encourage your kids to write a poem, essay or composition about what "home" means to them. Is Canada their new home? Is "home" the same things as "house"? What is important about a "home"?

The grand prize winner will take part in the ultimate gift - a new Habitat home for a deserving family. Genworth will donate $60,000 towards the building of a new Habitat home in a region chosen by the grand prize winner*. Last year’s winner, Sarah Murray, chose her home town of Kingston, Ontario. The grand prize winner also receives a high-performance computer.

The five runners-up will each help a family to get a home of their own. Genworth will donate $5,000 to a Habitat affiliate of the runner-up's choice, which will support the building of a new home in that community. Each runner-up also received a $100 gift certificate to Chapters-Indigo.
