How much do you pay a babysitter?

Here is the question of today Parent Club -- How much do you pay a babysitter?

Some of you may have loverly grandparents who babysit free-of-charge (or siblings/extended family/whatever) - or - some of you may have great neighbours who are willing to watch your kids for a couple of hours for a future return of service.

I have never known a teen babysitter to actually set a fee - they have left it up to me to set a price. I try to overpay -- so that the teenager A.)books me first if ever I call for a babysitting day B.) takes especially good care of my krazy kids C.) I know most of the parents of our babysitters and well, there is a point of not looking cheap.

This weekend I went to see Angels & Demons and paid a 'sitter $25 to watch my 'lil Angels & Demons.

For those of you who pay teenagers - to take on the responsibility to push play, watch for fires and ensure general well being of your children whilst you go out on the town...How much do you pay a babysitter?

A while back I read an article in Today's Parent that helped me decide how much to pay my babysitter here in Toronto (see link below). The babysitters I've used for my two boys have been in their late teens (high school or university age) and very responsible. I pay $8 per hour to play with the kids while my husband or I are around the house working on other tasks (mother's helper style), but if the responsibility increases with no parent around, then the fee goes up to $10 per hour.
another good source is the minimum wage rates from the Ministry of labour. In Ontario the current student (students under the age of 18) minimum wage is $8.90 per hour. On March 31, 2010 the student minimum wage will be $9.60 per hour!
Here's a link for more info on minimum wage:
http://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/es/guide/guide_4.html

Here's a link for an article on babysitter pay from Today's Parent:

Hope this is helpful!

You got off easy. My husband and I wnet to see the new Star Trek and have dinner out first and we paid $50.00 5 hr x $10.00). I had put dinner in the over and she did make sure the kids ate (she also had dinner)and she took the kids to the park and play Wii with them. Here in Calgary the job market is so crazy you have to pay at least $10/ hour.

Don't forget when students are paid minimum wage at a regular job (say McDonalds) they also have to pay taxes, CCP, EI etc (at some part time jobs they even pay union dues). none of those deductions are made of their babysitting money and I imagine few babysitters claim the $$s they make at baby sitting on their taxes...I don't think tax free income should be grouped in the same category as taxable income and as such I would suggest the minimum wage guideline does not really apply here...

I am a sitter in Colorado and make $10 to $15/hour for the first child, plus an additional $1/hour per child for multiple children. From what I've read on this site and others, it sounds like many people think this is ridiculously high. But consider how important your child is to you. I have a friend who is an interior painter and makes $25/hour. To me, this disparity in hourly wages sends the message that the quality of the paint job in one's house is more important (more valued) than the health and well-being of one's child/children.

Nonsense. It just means that there are plenty of sitters willing to work for less than $25/hour.

I am outside of Guelph, ON and have decided to pay my grade 7 student $6-$8/hr depending on number of kids (1-3) and time of day. I pay high-school/University more.

Sometimes its difficult to pay the $10 an hour for someone to watch your kids when you only make that amount in the first place at work. So how are you supposed to work and feed the children if you only make the amount you are paying out?

I am also a babysitter in Calgary, in my late 20's. I babysit during evenings and weekends after my full time job as a professional for some extra money to help pay for my wedding. I ask for $15 an hour, and thats usually for 2 kids. I think that wage is fair, if your looking for someone responsible to watch your kids. I havent had one family tell me thats its unreasonable yet, in fact, they always tell their friends about me and I get more families calling than I can handle!

When it comes to the safety and care of your children, all I can say is you.... get what you pay for.

I think It is diferent if you are using it as a career- If I was paying $10 an hour and up.. Id want to use it as a right off.
Like someone above said-- babysitters dont claim it and usually they are TEENS why do they need an exuberant ammount of money for sitting on a couch and watching tv.(usually mine are in bed when Im out) I think we are all forgettting what it was that we got paid???? I dont know about you but I had a $3 an hour babsitting job (im only 33) I still gave the best care I could possibly give to those kids AND cleaned there house!
