What is too grown up to watch on tv?

Do I miss the Barney days? No, not really (I fall into the audience who found/finds Barney the purple dinosaur obnoxious).

See, I recently bought "Wolverine" as a grown up movie and Thing 1 wanted to watch it. I thought it too - well, grown up - for viewing...however Thing 1 wanted to watch it.

See here's my problem - they watch the news when we watch the news... They heard about this girl gone missing in Ontario and this girl snatched from outside her house and found - alive - 18 years later.

My kids (our kids) know the difference between real and pretend - at this point. They know not to repeat bad words or re-enact fights they see on shows (there will be a whole 'nother post on kids and fights real soon - promise - I've got a good one post brewing in my 'noggin). But my point is - is that the news is - at times - more grown up - than superheros fighting each other.

I let Thing 1 watch Wolverine with me yesterday (whilst Thing 2 was at a birthday party - no, Thing 2 won't be watching the movie - though that child is old enough to know not to repeat grown up words - it doesn't mean it will happen). Thing 1 asked questions, made comments...it was all good.

Though I found myself changing the channel when the news came on...I don't miss Barney - but I miss the time in life when everything was positive.

I think the "too old" category is essentially whatver your wife says it is...

But another perspective would be to apply the idea that if they can explain it back to you, demostrating understanding, then it is probably ok for them.

You are the best judge of your children. When you watch your child react and see their behaviour on an on-going basis, you can tell whether something was too soon for them.

Remember, fairy tales used to scare kids... and fear is actually a healthy thing. It is what has allowed us to survive. If kids don't get exposed to things that challenge them emotionally, they won't grow up.

One of the greatest gifts of being human is the ability to learn from mistakes you haven't made - reasoning out the consequences to a hypothetical situation can prevent you from going down a road you shouldn't.
