Parent Club Giveaway: Energy Basket

The Ontario Power Authority, WWF-Canada and a major loyalty program have launched a campaign which provides Ontarians with a way to continue the momentum of Earth Hour by pledging to take simple actions that will have lasting financial rewards and help fight climate change.

One example action is reducing "phantom power" - the electricity used by electronics and appliances even when they're switched off - an unknown problem that accounts for as much as 15% of a home's monthly energy use!

Parent Club has TWO gift baskets (worth approx $250 each) to giveaway to help save energy in your house.

Each gift basket contains:
  • A power bar with automatic shutoff to reduce phantom power
  • 1,000 Bonus Air Miles (this could get $140 in grocery gift certificates, movie tickets or even a 3 piece luggage set)
  • A cute & cuddly toy panda from WWF-Canada
  • Cold water laundry detergent

TO ENTER:
Write a comment (below) on an action you do in your house to help save energy thus fighting climate change.

THE RULES (because life has rules)
  • Ontario entries only (sorry rest-of-the-world-friends)
  • One entry per day
  • Tweet the giveaway (and comment you did so) = an extra entry

Just yesterday my wonderful husband installed a clothes line in the backyard so that we can easily hang out our clean, wet laundry to dry instead of using the dryer! With weather temperatures this high who needs to make more heat!

We use a dual flush toilet which is energy efficient. Plus, the kids love to push the big and little buttons (respectively)

To save water and energy we have: dual flush toilets, low-flow shower heads, aerators on our faucets, front-loading washing machine and a tankless, on-demand gas water heater. I really want my own backyard swimming pool, but instead I am grateful for my neighbour's generocity with their pool.

We work hard around our home to reduce waste. We are very diligant waste separators in my home. We are careful to place recyclables, organic waste, yard waste and garbage in the appropriate containers. Every spring, after the snow melts, my children are eager to take a walk around our neighbourhood picking up garbage on the street (they like to use tongs). Whenever possible, we place our yard waste in reuseable garbage containers instead of paper yard waste bags. I am motivated in my purchasing to select items that have less packaging and I will pay more for an item if it is of better quality and will last longer so that I am hopefullly not creating waste (e.g. just bought a good skipping rope). I always have a bag to collect reuseable items from around the house that we are finished with for donation to Goodwill or another charity for reuse.

I was going to write about why I have an electric lawn mower instead of gas and then it occured to me that I haven't mentioned that we "Pay More for Energy"! Last fall we registered with Bullfrog Power to buy clean/green energy for our home!

And...when we recently purchased a new car, we used the Natural Resources Canada website to find a low-emissions, fuel-efficient vehicle. Our next car will definitely be a hybrid, or maybe the plug-in electric car!
