The Toronto Fall Home Show - Mommy's Day

The Toronto Home Fall Show had an great concept by having Mommy's Day presented by the good folks at sweetmama.ca. Throughout the run of the show; children 12 and under are free and admission is $12 per adult (but you can save $2.00 when your purchase tickets online at the Home Show site).

As promised, the Better Living Centre, Exhibition Place offered a stroller friendly environment. It was disappointing however, that they did not provide a partitioned off, private, diaper change and baby feeding area.

The workshop schedule had a nice array of parent-buzz topics like; Mom and Baby Fitness, Home Organizing 101 and Cupcake Decorating. The "Sweetmama-fy Your Home" workshop presented by the sweetmama.ca editors informed all on the hottest kid gear which is hip, practical, and stylish. Two products which stood out;

  • Combi Transitions High Chair $159.99, www.sears.ca
  • Potty Bench $34.99 USD, Boon Inc, www.booninc.com

You can see all the sweetmama-fying products on their website at Sweetmama.ca.

Though the home show had mostly home renovation and decorating booths we did manage to find two which were very interesting to the members of the Parent Club.

muralunique.com stopped us in our tracks. Beautiful, Canadian made, murals (actually wallpaper - but have the look of texture and custom artwork). Very reasonably priced, you can buy the wall paper on-line and have it shipped right to your door.

Doudoubebe.com was also a stand out in the booths. Friendly staff were well informed about their organic products. Parents should definitely check out this Canadian mama and baby online shop!

The Fall Home Show runs until September 21st.

    Parents Volunteer!

I have been busy building a website (and adding it to my growing list of superpowers). Not Parent Club, no I already gave birth to that baby. Another site for a local non-profit children's centre.

Let us hit the rewind button...years ago when Thing 1 and Thing 2 were smaller, busier, and well...less manageable I visited this children's centre a couple of times a week. A haven for me (as any stay-at-home parent can understand). A local destination which really helped me plan my day. The kids enjoyed FREE arts & crafts, FREE circle time, FREE snack. It was great. I volunteered to be on the Board of Directors of the centre in 2006.

I have learnt that it is important for parents to volunteer - be it in school or in the world. It teaches children social responsibility, giving for the sake of giving, community and plain ol' helping. Volunteering also provides people with the opportunity to build on experience - like me creating a website.

A non-profit children's centre really makes life easier for so many parents. I feel good about volunteering for such a good cause. Think globally - act locally...help when you can.

    Baking Soda is Family Friendly

This is from the arm & hammer baking soda website under the Just for Kids tag. Remember baking soda is a family friendly and good for green living.

    Sneaker Peekers

This fun craft does double duty. Kids will have a blast decorating these zany creatures – and then the ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda will go to work deodorizing those smelly sneakers! (Parent Club Note: this is also a good deodorizer for boots and bedrooms - though not for playing with!)

    What You Need:
1 new, white athletic sock (mid-calf size)
    1 cup ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda
    1 rubber band
    6" ribbon or string
felt, markers, buttons, and glue for decorating!

    How to Make it:
    1. Lay newspaper down on your work surface.
    2. Fill the sock with 1 cup ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda.
    3. Secure with rubber band.
    4. Tie ribbon around rubber band, cut off extra sock (cuff area).
    5. Decorate! Use Felt, Markers, Buttons, Sequins, etc. to make your Sneaker Peeker an animal, a monster, a flower! Anything goes!
    6. Stick them in your sneakers overnight for fresh shoes in the morning!

Remember the importance of adult supervision, especially with young children.

    Terry Fox Run in Toronto

Yesterday, my family and I did the Terry Fox run. Actually, to be precise; dh did the Terry Fox run, I did the Terry-Fox-pull-the-wagon-with-a-kid-in-it-backpack-too-don't-forget-the-umbrella-haul.

The turn out at our usual Terry Fox location wasn't very big - I expect it was because of the weather (hello Ike). I admit, when I woke up...I was not looking forward to my Terry-Fox-pull-the-wagon-with-a-kid-in-it-backpack-too-don't-forget-the-umbrella-haul. It's darn hard work!

Then I thought about who was expecting us at the park. A cousin, who when she was 7 years old (same age as Thing 1 now), stayed for weeks at a time, in Sick Kids because of leukemia. Her parents had to trade off hospital over-nights because there were still two younger children at home that needed them. I can't imagine having a child - so sick. (insert shudder HERE).

No, we didn't want to do the walk yesterday. But, then again, I doubt anyone wanted to have cancer yesterday either. So we put on our running shoes, filled the backpack with granola bars and walked (or hauled in my case).

It was a tiring, hot, hard walk - we commented; that it seemed as though the finished line was a bit further this year...but then, I imagine that the families at Sick Kids must have a more tiring, hotter, harder walk than this.
