Jan. 1, 2008 Activities

Happy New Year to everyone!

Wondering what to do for the 1st day of 2008? You could drive to Oakville to see the Courage Brothers Annual Polar Bear Dip (where many dip into icy Lake Ontario).

You could participate in some drive-by dropping-in...visiting friends and family - eating cookies - drinking hot chocolate.

You could play games and toys in your pj's all day...then turn it into a pizza and movie night (perhaps have a bath and change pj's).

Parent Club hopes 2008 brings you adventure, happiness and health.

Homemade Energy Drink

Ironically, I saw on television last night a recipe for homemade energy drinks (like gatorade or pedialite) which replaces electrolytes when someone is dehydrated. These are good recipes to have on hand for when someone is sick and the pedialite in the cupboard is from 2004 (really it was). Or for those sport days when you need to replace fluids.

The important thing about the drinks is that you need potassium (the orange juice) and the sodium (salt). It's also important to use boiling water where indicated. I think recipe 2 and 3 look best.

Basic Recipe 1

  • 1/2 cup orange juice

  • 9 tbs. Sugar

  • 3/8 tsp Salt

  • Water to 2 liters

  • Recipe 2

  • 4 tablespoons sugar

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 cup boiling water

  • 1/4 cup orange juice (not concentrate) or 2 tablespoons lemon juice

  • 3-3/4 cups cold water

    • 1. In the bottom of a pitcher, dissolve the sugar and salt in the hot water.
      2. Add the juice and the remaining water; chill.

    Yield: 1 quart

    Recipe 3

  • 1 caffeine-free lemon tea bag

  • Water

  • 2 tablespoons sugar

  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

  • 4 tablespoons orange juice

    • Bring 16 ounces of water to a boil.
      Steep lemon tea bag.
Dissolve sugar and salt in the tea and let cool.
Combine the tea and orange juice and chill.

    What happened to Christmas?...

We had no Christmas in our house this year. Isn't that sad? So much planning. So much cleaning. So much excitement.

No sooner had we put on our fancy duds for a yummy Christmas Eve dinner -- I heard not reindeer footsteps -- but retching in the bathroom. Quicker than Santa goes up a chimney; I had the child in pj's in a wink of an eye. Dinner was burnt in the meantime. Oh well, the guests didn't want to come anyway since the stomach flu was so -- violently upon us.

We missed Christmas Eve, we missed Christmas Day. Apparently, it did come. I missed watching my littiest open her presents because I came down with the same flu through the night. The littliest had it too -- but her enthusiasm for Santa surpassed the nausea in the wee hours of the morning and she got herself down the stairs with her prince of a Papa. The older one mustered some strength in the middle of the day to open presents - in between asking for the bucket (self-explanatory I believe).

Quite honestly, I would choose natural child-birth again over having this flu. It was that bad. We're still battling the bug. Haven't left the house for days. Sick enough to be weak. Not sick enough to share toys, TV or space on the couch. No, we are strong enough to whine, cry and call for a parent - not a sure sign of getting better unfortunately.

WE NEED TO GET OUT OF THIS HOUSE!
