Sick jealousy

Are you ever in the position where one child (or parent) is sick and all of a suddent there is pain and illness in someone else? Not a true, vomitting sickness. But a papercut or a sore ankle. Some sort of attention getter.

Call is sick jealousy. Sick Empathy. Sick Sympathy. It is a symphony of feeling - that is sure.

Rx for this problem; Extra cuddles. Extra attention. Quiet time as required.

Vinegar tip

Does you child's room smell a bit off in the morning? Pour white vinegar into a spray bottle and spritz the room. The vinegar removes odours beautifully. It's environmentally friendly too.

The vinegar smell disappears quickly leaving the room odourless.

Parent Club review - Disney on Ice

Attended the fantabulous ice show; Disney Princess Classic on Ice at the Rogers Centre over the weekend. As you've come to expect with anything "Disney" it was entertaining and fun. Here are some tips we learnt from this experience.

    1. Dealing with waiting for the ticket guy -- when you can hear that the show has already started. We overheard a parent say "don't worry there still lots to see in the show." What a good idea...rather than harp on what you have missed tell your child there is still so much more to see.

    2. Take your own snacks. Unless pizza and popcorn are really part of the outing treat...pack a favourite snack. That way you won't have to line up or miss out on the show.

    3. Take your own souvenirs. At the Disney show a colouring book magazine was $25, a plastic character cup filled with sno cone type of snack was $10. That's a lot of money for something that will end up at the bottom of the toy box. We went to the dollar store last week, purchased glow necklaces (6 to a package) that could be turned into necklaces, bracelets or magic wands. In most shows, where there will be darkness (the Garden Bros. Circus & Disney shows - both stage and ice - for example) sell toys that glow.

We recommend Disney shows. Great fun!

Parent Grudge

Do you ever hold a grudge against your kids? Perhaps it's because they had an outrageously bad behaviour tired day yesterday. Perhaps it's because they woke up constantly through the night -- therefore waking you constantly through the night. Perhaps it was the endless whining of the morning.

Does this make you have a short fuse? Hold a grudge? Brace yourself for the day? It's hard to let go of resentment, fatigue, and general you've-worn-me-out feelings. Especially, when you are faced with busy days - whether it be inside or outside of the home.

Try to breath. Shake up the routine or stick darn hard to it - whichever will get you through the grudge day. Just remember the kids are probably tired, not feeling well or just out of sorts. Teach them empathy by being empathetic yourself.

Then, when the kids are finally tucked into bed...recharge your batteries. Enjoy a long shower (lock the door), drink a big cup of tea (or glass of wine), google a bit or read a magazine. Energize, centre yourself and relax. Tomorrow is another day.
