Yo Gabba Gabba!

We attended the March 17th 11 am show for Yo Gabba Gabba's tour "There's a party in my City". I knew before getting to the Elgin theatre that this would be a huge deal for my daughter and her cousin but had no idea the mommies would also enjoy it.
The vibe in the theatre was almost euphoric for the sub 6 yr. old crowd as we shuffled past the busy merchandise concession to find our seats. Our kids were handed a pair of black rimmed paper glasses reminiscent of the style Dj Lance Rock wears. The girls immediately put them on and started to giggled and dance in their place. I felt like I was at a rock concert.

The lights dimmed and the stage came alive with a montage of video images and out walked the popular DJ Lance Rock onto the screen in his signature orange jumpsuit, fun fur hat and of course those black rimmed glasses. He placed his giant boom box down and said the namesake words: "YO Gabba Gabba" then he climbed out of the video onto the stage and introduce the cuddly creatures who perform the catchy songs that teach kids to eat different foods and that mistakes are part of growing up. Plex, a yellow robot, Muno, a cyclops, Brobee, a short two tone green fuzzy dude with long arms, Foofa, a combination cat/dragon and the sweet voiced pink flower thingy Toodee all groove to the hip hop beats that make this a different type of kids entertainment, a way to allow parents who grew up with the original Electric company and seventies esthetic to actually relate to this new/old style of cool for kids.

There was a special appearance by rapper Biz Markie who taught the audience the beat of the day and a performance by a surfer/ska band called the Aquabats.

Move over Barney, Yo Gabba Gabba is a hit!

Parent Club Review: Mr. Christie's Snak Paks Soft Baked Cookies

THE WHAT: Mr. Christie's Snak Paks Soft Baked Cookies

THE HOW:  Single serving snack that satisfies both parents and children with its ymmy tase and the nutritional benefits of fibre and iron (low in saturated fat and 0 trans fat)

THE VARIETIES: *all varieties have a touch of vegetable purée to keep them soft
  • Double Chocolate
  • Oatmeal Chocolate Chip
  • Oatmeal Cinnamon
THE REVIEW:  nom nom nom.  This is an easy lunch box, soccer practice or in the car snack.  The individual portions help control how much snack is eaten.  Overall, the double chocolate was the favourite (close second: oatmeal chocolate chip).

6% of the daily intake of iron per package along with 2g of fibre.  It is definately a treat - but a safe peanut free indulgence.

Added-Value:  Kraft Canada has partnered with http://www.terracycle.ca/ to "upcycle" the trash from these products.  Schools and groups can collect the packaging and send them to TerraCycle (they get paid about .2 cents per package) - then TerraCycle turns them into a recycled product (bag, pencil case, yoga mat holder, etc...) for re-sale.  = Less landfill waste!

Product Review: Dr. Oetker Shakers

THE WHAT:
Dr. Oetker Shakers

THE HOW:
Dr. Oetker introduces Shaker: Just add milk or water, and shake to make delicious cupcakes, muffins, and pancakes.

• Just add milk, shake and pour.
• No time wasted, no measuring, no extra ingredients to add
• Best of all… no cleanup!
• 0 Trans Fat, Source of Fibre, Prebiotic

THE REVIEW:

Easy is right!  Twist off the cap, fill the milk to the line on the container, put the cap back on and shake.

We make some Dr. Oetkers Shakers on a night where the kids wanted an activity and I wasn't up for huge particpation myself.  Kids really enjoyed shaking (we put on some Michael Jackson and they danced around the kitchen - shaking).  The joy of baking without the headache moderating who gets to stir the wooden spoon next.  So easy - I let the kids each make their own, respective, batches of cupcakes.

Taste was nice too.  This would be a good go-to product if you had to send treats to school and didn't have the time (energy or will) to make from scratch.

If you had environmental concerns, you could wash the containers and re-use them (a catch-all for erasers? elastic bands? stickers?)
A great hands-on, kid-friendly baking product.
