Parent Club Profiles | Theresa Albert

Name please.
Theresa Albert

Your Website?
www.myfriendinfood.com

What's your specialty? (work-wise - you're probably pretty special at a lot of things)
I help people become friends with their food. As a chef and nutritionist, I think that food can be beautiful, delicious AND nourishing but our culture seems to act otherwise. Whatever it takes to convince people that it takes no time at all to make healthier decisions and love putting food on the table, that’s what I do. I guide, coach in private practice, teach in public, write, cook, promote, host for tv, entertain, talk, talk, talk some more…

What's your shameless plug? (books, blogs, bling, etc.)
Ace Your Health, 52 Ways to Stack Your Deck was released Jan 1, 2011

www.myfreindinfood.com was built to support every day people through the changes in actions, consumption and thinking that I am constantly nudging them to do

Best thing about your work:
The best thing about my work is that people trust me with their health. Many of the issues with food are intensely personal and I never judge what another person feels capable of doing. The honesty and authenticity that comes with that kind of relationship is astounding.

Parent or not a parent?
Yes Parent of a 15 year old stunningly smart and beautiful young woman

Share a typical Tuesday (really we want to hear how you "do it all")
You have to be kidding me! OK here goes…

  • Make sure said kid is out of bed and get her out the door by 8 am

  • Go to the gym

  • If it’s a media day, come home and get fully dressed, pile on the make up and go to set

  • If it’s a home day, stay in my sweats and get back to my desk for 2-3 hours to write

  • Lunch-check in on twitter and eat at my desk

  • Develop recipes for my website/next book/newsletter in the aft

  • Set up and take photos while the daylight is good

  • On the phone on my headset most of the time while I am doing this

  • Take a break at 3 pm to have a drink/snack with teen for 15 minutes (or as long as she will tolerate)

  • Back to desk to write newsletter, upload photos

  • Load content in the back end of website www.myfriendinfood.com and pray for the day I can pay someone to do this crap

  • 5 pm walk the dog with BFF as often as possible

  • Drive kid to dance/friends/event

  • Make dinner/have a glass of red wine with Hubs

  • Get ready for an evening event 2-4 nights per week

  • Usually talk on the phone with my mom while I am doing this

  • If it’s a travel day, pack, organize etc

  • Most days in bed by 9 and read til 10.

    Do you blog?
More article writing than blogging but yes. I have a few clients who pay for my expertise and they get the attention first. I also have a few sites that I contribute to for fun.

    Do you tweet?
Yes! Love it! It helps me feel connected when I am alone all day or on the road. I learn a lot from tweeps and follow people who are doing cool things in food and health.

Link to a post/portfolio/recipe piece you think shows your most supreme skills:
    www.myfriendinfood.com

    Wallflower or social butterfly?
    Social butterfly in public

Total hermit at home. I don’t answer the door or the phone if I don’t have to. Need quiet time to restore.

Name 3 people you would like to meet-in-person from Twitter (add why so we can follow them too)...
Mark Bittman-NYT food writer - for his staunch belief in home cooking

Marion Nestle -Food politics writer-for her staunch belief that we can manage big food business through political means

Both of the above have views that are worthy but somewhat unrealistic. I love that they have the energy and the courage to push the envelope.

Sarah Silverman-comedian – cuz she is hilarious

Is Breast Best or Formula Faster?

Opening this up to debate in the Parent Club...

Is Breast Best or Formula Faster?

A hot topic amongst new parents - I know. But I also know its a personal choice - and one that external parties (family, friends, the internetz) must respect (so let's respect ok).

I have known many Moms who planned for breastfeeding only to have a roadblock appear. The dissapointment. The emotional pull ("am I a bad mother if I can't make milk for my own child?"). The challenges of finger feeding and latching and pumping.

There are Moms who chose not to breastfeed because it just isn't their thing. There
are certain cultures and generations where breastfeeding just isn't done.

Studies do show that breastfeeding is best for one's child. It creates immunities and such. Plus, it's always the right tempreture.

But for those who chose (or don't chose must must go with) forumla - there is the decision of which "brand" is the right one.

I direct you to a post by Curious Dad (a Canadian) which compared "brands" from a cost and nutritional standpoint: Store Brand Formula

What think you about Breast Vs. Formula?
