Earth Day Events in Toronto

Check out the Parent Club Calendar (to the left) to get the details on Earth Day events happening this weekend in and around Toronto.

Do your own Earth event this weekend by planting a flower, cleaning up the garden/or local park, and turning off extra energy sources.

Look to Parent Club next week for some great Eco websites for kids.

Got Milk? - Parent Club Tip

Do you forget your bottles of milk, juice or water containers when you visit friends? Are you always half a block away when you remember the item is in the fridge.

Here's a handy tip...put your car keys in the fridge with the bottle.

This has also worked well in the past when I have picked up dinner (salmon) while out but then dropped in on a friend. Not wanting to leave without my dinner - but knowing full well I would forget it - I put my car keys in with the fish. On my way out the door, I realized my keys were missing -- then realized my dinner was missing too.

It's a Parent Club tip!

Tried & True Loaf Recipe

This is a new favourite recipe. It makes 2 loaves which is fantabulous because you can eat one and freeze one. Take out of the freezer the night before a play date and you've got homemade snack!

It's from recipe.com -- Chocolate Chip Loaf (though I've played with the variations --- see below). Moist, yummy and did I mention it makes TWO!

2 cups sugar
1 cup butter or shortening (I use 1/2 butter and a bit of applesauce)

3 cups flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt

1 cup buttermilk
2 tsp vanilla
4 eggs

1. Sift dry ingredients
2. Cream butter + sugar + eggs then add vanilla
3. Add dry ingredients
4. Add buttermilk

options; add 1 cup of chocolate chips (as per original recipe -- but note -- coat the chips in flour or they will sink to the bottom -- we know this). I've ignored the chip option and swirled in brown sugar and cinnamon. Works well as a coffee cake loaf. Could try 1 cup of blueberries too.

Coffee - Fair to Families?

Click the video to see the trailer for "Black Gold".

This documentary "Black Gold" is about coffee. Families in coffee growing countries are going hungry because the price of coffee is so low. Children are dying of hunger because their the price of coffee is so low. This film shows the example of how some farmers are growing chat - a narcotic - instead of coffee beans because chat reaps higher profit for their families.

Hmmm...Is it our duty as parents -- to help the economies of other parents?

These families work no harder than we do. They love their children no less. By geographical lottery, we are in the better situation.

The great debate; Organic Vs. fair trade. Organic is not fair trade. Buying organic does help farmers. Fair trade also helps farmers. Organic is expensive. Fair trade even more so.

The cheapest fair trade coffee I have found is $9.00. Organic - on sale - $5.00. "Commercial" no-name is $2.99. Which choice leaves the better taste in your mouth?

Cleaning tip

Having trouble getting to the corners of the rubbermaid reusable box, sippy cup or bottle?...

Here's a neat tip. Sprinkle in some uncooked rice and add a bit of water. The rice will work as an abrasive and will easily get into those corners.

Great for cleaning empty jam jars too.
