Happy Birthday Thing 1

Today is Thing 1's birthday. No more sleeps. No more waiting. IT IS TODAY.

Thing 1 is 8 years old (insert gasp here). I still see my baby in that face. I still help put clothing on that little body. I still cuddle those bones in my lap. Yet, I do realize that Thing 1 is now officially a KID.

We are at a point in parenting - where we have to bite our tongues, save discussions for later and not spell out words (d-a-r-n i-t). We are at a point where "is Papa Noel real?..." is a serious question backed by curosity and fear.

I always thought kids would be less maintenace as they grow older. However, their stuff gets bigger, thier needs get more expensive and you get simply addicted to being there.

Writing Contest for Grades 4, 5 & 6

From October 6 to November 14, 2008 Habitat for Humanity Canada and Genworth Financial Canada are asking students in grade 4, 5 and 6 across Canada to write about what "home" means to them by entering the Meaning of Home Contest.

The 2007 contest had over 1,900 entries! This year, they are hoping for greater success by accepting English and French submissions. It is estimated that over 300,000 Canadians are homeless - this year alone. This includes Moms, Dads and kids.

Encourage your kids to write a poem, essay or composition about what "home" means to them. Is Canada their new home? Is "home" the same things as "house"? What is important about a "home"?

The grand prize winner will take part in the ultimate gift - a new Habitat home for a deserving family. Genworth will donate $60,000 towards the building of a new Habitat home in a region chosen by the grand prize winner*. Last year’s winner, Sarah Murray, chose her home town of Kingston, Ontario. The grand prize winner also receives a high-performance computer.

The five runners-up will each help a family to get a home of their own. Genworth will donate $5,000 to a Habitat affiliate of the runner-up's choice, which will support the building of a new home in that community. Each runner-up also received a $100 gift certificate to Chapters-Indigo.

Parent Club - Family Road Trip Tips

Free Clipart

What the heck did parents ever do before the portable dvd player?

I do remember playing "punchbuggy red" when someone saw a bug vehicle on the road and he/she could yell at the top of his/her lungs "punchbuggy red" and then that someone could hit -as hard as one could - the sibling sitting next closest (good times - oh, wait -- I was always the one getting hit). Here are some good - modern day, violence free - ways to occupy kids on a long road trip.

  • snacks - a great time buster. Choose semi-healthy, semi-treat things to make it interesting. I like to take empty containers or small ziplock bags so that I can re-fill for the kids (also makes a lot less backseat mess). Teddy Grahams (chocolate of course), cheerios, nesquick cereal (chocolate again), granola bars, fruit-to-go. Also, a big family sized bottle of water.
  • portable dvd player. So worth the investment!
  • mp3 players for school aged kids. Sounds like an overkill. But who can listen to flippin' High School Musical one more time! Robert Munsch also has audio stories - free - for download on his site.
  • notepads and pencils. good for scribbles, notes passed to the front seat.
  • one surprise item from the dollar store. (more than one if you are driving for longer than 6 hours). Something nice enough to enjoy but not so nice that you will be worried leaving it at a potty stop.
