Travel w. Kids Tips

  • A pashima (or shawl) is a great one-size-fits-all sweater for girls big and small. It can also be a blanket, rain cover and table cloth in a pinch.
  • An empty large plastic or cloth bag is handy for separating clean and dirty clothes (and for bringing home wet bathing suits)
  • Always pack a small stuffed animal for your child to sleep with!
  • Do your kids have a nightlight at home? Consider taking it with you (or a flashlight) on your holidays.

    I ain't no April Fool

Thanks to the reader who B.) reminded us today is April 1st* B.) April 1st is April Fool's Day** C.) sent in this link http://familyfun.go.com/aprilfools/ to trick/prank/fool your family with recipe ideas and activities.

Not that we support fooling your family. Have you read Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food by Jessica Seinfield (who married the guy who did the voice of Barry in the Bee Movie - remember him...what ever happened to him?)

After reading a recipe in that book which married cauliflower and brownies (really)- I concluded fooling my family wasn't tasteful (literally).

Sometimes I think they are pranking me...like when Thing 2 said "Mommy - why are you dressing so fancy?" when I was wearing jeans. Then, I humbly realized - it was no joke - jeans are up-dressing in my oh-so-comfy-work-at-home-world of yoga pants. [my mom gave me a gift certificate for my birthday to buy something which would make me feel good and look nice for my husband to come home to -- thought that was a prank too] {both my presumption they were pranking me & their comments on my attire prove I am obviously gullible and look-trailer-chique].

*April 1st - headed to Great Wolf Lodge - look for the Parent Club write-up!
**April 1st is my sister-in-law's birthday (no foolin'). As I will be away - could someone kindly call/skype France and wish her joyeux anniversaire from me please

    PC Blue Menu Product Review

This is the 2nd part in a two part review series of Blue Menu Products. The Parent Club test panel are real families with real opinions (and they are nothing if not candid!). Read on...

The Blue Menu "ginger and Lemon Cookies" - were yummy. Left a nice taste in my mouth - not too sweet.

The "on Track" - breakfast cereal was a little flat. Maybe a little more honey???

"Barley with Mushrooms" side dish was an interesting surprise - in a good way.

"PC Fair Trade Tea - Orange Pekoe PC Organics" and "Fair Trade Dark Roast Coffee" tasted the same as my regular tea and coffee but the fair trade aspect was gratifying. At about the same price as regular teas and coffees - I am switching to these products because they are fair trade.

    Moms Vs. Dads

Dad's see parenting as a map; with a road going from A to B. They, as Dad's do, look for the shortest route to get to B (as they are thinking about time, fuel consumption and their own "let's go" mentality).

Mom's see parenting as a GPS navigation system. They are on the same road...going from A to B. However, Mom's are always on the lookout for the next turn, washroom, restaurant and playground.

Case in point. A Dad (and for the life of me I can't remember which Dad) once told me his strategy for taking kids out. "I have a cell phone and a wallet. What more do I need?". It was an A-ha! moment. True enough - if you go out with kids - you can quite certainly buy or call for whatever you need. Dad's are thinking about the destination - not the trip.

Have you ever seen a Mom's bag? It filled with toy cars, snacks, stainless-steel water bottles, Kleenex, sunglasses, paper & crayons, hair elastics, band aids and lollipops. Oh, and a wallet and cellphone. Mom's are thinking about the trip, the roadblocks, the detours, the destination and the return trip.

Feel free to call me on this one - if you feel compelled. Moms cannot enjoy the trip without the plan. We need a plan. We embrace our plan. We own our plan. Dad's - Dad's are along for the ride. They've got the wallet and their cellphone and will burn that bridge when they get to it. (there is both envy and contempt for those bridge attitudes).

Parenting is a very twisted road - don't you agree?
