An Interview with Craig Kielburger

A very cool read...surf over to my yummymummyclub.ca column for my interview with Canadian child rights activist Craig Kielburger (founder of Free the Children, Me to We and also a recipient of the Order of Canada).

Kids helping kids
An Interview with Craig Kielburger

I had the chance to review two titles from Me to We Books My Maasai Life: A Child’s Adventure in Africa by Robin Wiszowaty and Lessons From a Street Kid by international children’s rights activist Craig Kielburger. After reading them I wanted one thing: an interview with Craig.

Homosexuals in Hockey? Does it matter?

Surf over to my yummymummyclub.ca column to read my latest post
Homosexuals in Hockey?  Does it matter?

This was a shock tag line I heard on the radio the other day. I thought to myself? In this day and age, what does sexual orientation have to do with sports? Then days after, my kids asked me what is "gay"...

Yummy Mummy Club Column

Over at my Yummy Mummy Club column I'm starting a bit of a debate about

Should kids sell cookies for fundraisers?
And are we morally obliged to buy them...

Kids are out there hocking cookies, magazines and chocolate bars to raise money for their schools and other organizations. Are kid-selling fundraisers good team building or is it parents paying the price?..

Why Blogging Makes Me A Better Mother

I encourage you to surf over to my Yummy Mummy Club "Activity Mummy" column to read my latest post on "Why Blogging Makes Me A Better Mother". The comments are a-buzz!

Why-for read this particular column? Well, when it was mentioned by Erica Ehm and Tracy at a special CityLine taping yesterday (and yes, I was on-camera too talking about a whole 'nother parenting issue...set your pvrs for Monday March 29th!).

SuperMom is dead. | YMC Post

I, again, send you over to my Yummy Mummy Club column to read a post which I believe hits home to many Moms..."SuperMom is dead. I killed her."

The SuperMom myth (falsely and so wrongly) tells us we can "do it all and have it all". Uh-huh, sure we can...and we can go insane trying...and be miserable while getting there.

She was a bad role model. Perfectly clean house. Perfectly behaved kids. Perfectly satisfied spouse. Perfectly balanced life. I had to kill her. SuperMom (and her myth) had to go into the diaper genie where they belonged.

Play ground or paycheck? | YMC post

I would love to read your thoughts about my recent YMC post: Play ground or paycheck? The Great Mom Debate. It's a hot topic - stay-home? go to work? and are parents allowed permission to regret their decisions?...

It is a fantastic debate...withdraw from the paid workforce for family care giving or opt-out of the playground years to provide for the family. Katy Read's recent article, "Regrets of a Stay-at-Home Mom" (salon.com) re-sparked the debate of stay-at-home vs work-in-the-world. So what will it be?...play ground or pay cheque?

Baby Blues over at Yummy Mummy Club

My latest Yummy Mummy Club column on the Baby Blues has hit a cord with readers, tweeps and parenting groups.

This post - which was meant as a "better out than in" emotional release has been praised on twitter and in the comment section:

boomda181: loved your honest article. It will help so many new mommies.

grow_with_me: I read your baby blues post and I could have written it myself word for word.

jenngoddess: I had the baby-blues and thought they would never pass. Give @ParentClub some props for going public with hers...

WonderMoms_ca: Huge Kudos for you talking about it. I am thrilled women talk about "Baby Blues" openly. We use to bottle it up. Pardon the pun.

Meganliddle: Just wanted to say kudos on your baby blues article! Refreshing to see it spoken about so candidly.

aftergloTO: Honest post and brave for sharing. You are not alone.

Easy Teacher Gifts

Swing over to my Yummy Mummy Club column to read my suggestions on
Easy Teacher Presents

In my world, teacher gifts were costing a fortune and a ton of crazy.

Now, instead of thinking "What do I give the teacher?"...I ask the kids "What are YOU going to give the teacher?" - because it is their gift to a special person in their lives...not mine.

And from my talking with teacher friends...teacher's don't need another box of chocolates...

Yummy Mummy Column

I try not to get too rant-ish in my writing...but I just had to voice an opinion over at my Yummy Mummy Club column.

Little Girls Should Not Look Like Hookers For Halloween

Ironic how the Dove Weekend for Self Esteem has just past - where we were to remind our girls how smart, beautiful and powerful they are (and forever will be). Ironic, because when I took my 10 year old daughter Halloween shopping...her costume choices looked very much like hoochie-mama streetwear. Little girls should not look like hookers for Halloween.

This is a picture of a real Halloween costume - on sale now - for 10 yr old girls.

Yummy Mummy Club: Do organized sports bring out the worst in parents

Surf over to my space at Yummy Mummy Club to read my latest post about how organized sports sometimes bring out the worst in parents.

Kids' Sports: Activity or Armageddon?

This weekend, at my kids' year-end soccer tournament, I heard a parent yell "Hey, Jane* if you want a play date tomorrow you better WAKE UP!". My jaw dropped, as did the Mom sitting next to me. WTH? Threatening your kid the loss of a play date if she didn't improve her field performance? Who does this?

Yummy Mummy Club posts

Today my head is replaying yesterday's 911 experience...while my kids lean on my chair and ask "What are you typing?" "I'm Boooorrred" "Can you accompany me to the bathroom?" (really!).

So, in fatigue, frustration and some other-really-good-verbs-that-start-with-"f" - I send you to look at my recent Yummy Mummy Club column space - which tells the whys and why-nots of my current headspace...

Helicopter Kids and Free-Range
Helicopter Kids or Velcro Children? Read my article which explores the term "Helicopter Kids" and concludes some kids just need flight plans.

911 + ambulance + firetruck = a lot of questions Read my article chronically calling 911 - in front of my kids - and all the questions an emergency brings about.

It all makes one le tired.
